This page explains what that extension was, what its own site says about it now, and what else you can try. We make one of the alternatives (InvestFellow), so we've kept to facts you can check, with the sources at the bottom. Finance Toolbar is a name used by its developer, and InvestFellow isn't affiliated with it.

What Finance Toolbar was

Finance Toolbar is a browser extension published by stefanvd.net. According to its project page, it's free and open source, and it shows your stocks in a scrolling bar below the address bar. A few things its page lists:

  • Choose your own quotes, and put them in your own order.
  • Show price, percent change or market cap.
  • Pick the scroll speed and behavior, font and font size.
  • Invert the red and green colors.
  • A currency converter bar with four currency pairs.
  • A refresh interval you can change. The default listed is every 1 minute.
  • Dozens of interface languages, and versions for many browsers, including Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Opera.
  • Separate Finance Toolbar apps for Windows and Mac.

The project page says the stock data came from the NASDAQ API.

What its own pages say about its status

The changelog pages for the Chrome and Edge versions both open with the same notice: "Development has ceased due to the discontinuation of the free IEX Cloud API." They point people to the Windows and Mac apps instead. The newest entry on the Chrome changelog is dated 19 March 2020 (version 1.0.0.6).

Two other points, for context:

  • The project page for the browser extension still describes it as a working free extension and doesn't repeat that notice, as far as we could see.
  • The third-party extension archive chrome-stats.com says the extension was removed from the Chrome Web Store on August 26, 2023, with version 1.0.0.6 as the last one.

We haven't installed it, so we can't tell you whether it still shows prices today. If you use it, check that it still works for you.

Where Finance Toolbar is the better pick

Here are the trade-offs, with the places where Finance Toolbar wins. If these matter to you, read its own pages first:

  • Open source. Finance Toolbar is free and open source, per its project page. InvestFellow is closed source. Its ticker bar and watchlist are free, but some features are Premium.
  • Display options. It has a currency converter bar and more options for fonts, font size and scroll behavior, per its page.
  • More browsers. It lists many browsers, including Firefox and Safari, and has desktop apps for Windows and Mac. InvestFellow is for Chrome and Edge.
  • Refresh speed on a free plan. Its default refresh is every 1 minute and you can change it. InvestFellow's free plan refreshes every 2 minutes. Premium refreshes every 4 seconds.
  • Languages. Its page lists dozens of interface languages. InvestFellow has three: English, Traditional Chinese and Hindi, from version 2.0.4.
  • Adding many symbols. InvestFellow has no import. You add stocks one at a time by searching in "Quotes to monitor", so a long list takes a while to set up. We didn't find anything on Finance Toolbar's pages either way about importing a list.

Alternatives

InvestFellow

InvestFellow is a stock ticker bar for Chrome and Edge. It shows the stocks, ETFs and indices on your watchlist in a thin bar at the top or bottom of the page, on every site or only on the sites you choose. It's what we make, it's closed source, and you don't need an account or a sign-up to use it, free or Premium.

Free:

  • The ticker bar, scrolling or static, top or bottom, with swappable up and down colors.
  • A watchlist of stocks, ETFs and indices. Search by company name or ticker, one at a time.
  • Position, motion and site settings for the bar.
  • Prices refresh every 2 minutes.

Premium ($4.99 a month after a 7-day free trial, paid through PayPal):

  • Prices refresh every 4 seconds.
  • A second toolbar for market movers: Index Funds, Most Active, Crypto, Top Gainers and Top Losers.
  • Crypto in your watchlist, price alerts, and AI insights.

Price alerts are Premium only. Quotes come from Yahoo Finance through InvestFellow's API, and prices can be delayed.

Prices and AI insights are information, not advice.

StockPriceAlerts and StockEye (if you mostly want alerts)

If the part of the toolbar you used was watching one or two prices, a dedicated alerts extension may fit better, and both of these have free versions. Neither shows a ticker bar, based on their listings.

  • StockPriceAlerts: free, sends Chrome notifications at a target price, US stocks and ETFs on NYSE and NASDAQ, no login per its listing.
  • StockEye: notifies you when a price crosses your trigger. The listing says the free version takes 3 symbols and the full version 10, that it only supports NASDAQ stocks for now, and that it offers in-app purchases.

How to switch to InvestFellow

  4. Optional: upgrade to Premium (7-day free trial) for faster updates, the second toolbar and price alerts. For a step-by-step on alerts, see How to get stock price alerts in Chrome.

FAQ

Is Finance Toolbar still maintained?

Its own changelog pages for Chrome and Edge say development has ceased because the free IEX Cloud API was discontinued, and point to Windows and Mac apps. The newest Chrome changelog entry is from March 2020.

What's a free alternative to Finance Toolbar?

InvestFellow's ticker bar and watchlist are free, with prices refreshing every 2 minutes, and no account or sign-up is needed. Premium is optional. If you mostly want alerts, StockPriceAlerts is free per its listing.

Is InvestFellow open source?

No. InvestFellow is closed source. Finance Toolbar is open source, according to its project page.

Does InvestFellow have a currency converter like Finance Toolbar?

How often does InvestFellow update prices?

Every 2 minutes on the free plan, and every 4 seconds on Premium. Prices can be delayed.
